- Architecture - Style and time period? El Alhambra was built as an Arabic style building and shows amazing architecture. It is a palace type building that shows a lot about it's time period. Construction on El Alhambra began in the 9th century and ended around the 14th century.
- Contents- What is in it? What types of works, styles? The Alhambra is an old Nazarite palace filled with grand courtyards, beautiful fountains and green gardens. There are peaceful walkways with trees lined up along the path for shade. La Alcazaba (the Citadel) is the oldest building there, and if you stand on the La Vela tower, the Alhambra looks spectacular.
- Influence - Any other cultures, styles influenced its contruction? The Muslim culture really influenced how the Alhombra was built. It was one of the largest political buildings of it's time. Many monarchs and their servants lived in the Alhambra as well as worked there.
- Why is it called what it is called? Named after someone? Word origin? Because the Alhambra has an Arabic style, the name also comes from Arabic origin. The Alhambra derives from an Arabic word meaning “red or crimson castle”. When they were constructing this fortress, they used torches for light, so the reflection of the torches reflected on the Alhambra, and gave it its red glow. Therefore, they called it the Alhambra.
- Regional Importance - How does this landmark reflect or help define the culture of this region and/or Spain as a whole? It helps us too understand the importance of beautiful architecture in the olden day times. With this building comes a lot of history regarding the Arab war and political times. Also, it showed how the Arab culture became corrupt because the rich were living with their slaves in palaces while the poor had no place to live.
