Catalonia- La Sagrada Familia

Julia Manzella & Elizabeth Odil

1. Name- Why is it called what it is called?

'La Sagrada Familia' means 'The Holy Family,' as it is a Catholic church located in Barcelona. Its full name is 'Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia,' or 'Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family.'

2. People- Famous people associated with this landmark? Who built it? Who died there? Who is buried there?

The idea to build the church came from a man named Josep Maria Bocabella, who wanted the Catholic Church to rise in power and standing during the Industrial Revolution, when ideas about religion and other social aspects that had been held for many years were changing. The church was physically built by an artist named Antoni Gaudi, who died in 1926 and is buried in the church's crypt today.

5. Architecture- Style and time period?

La Sagrada Familia is an example of the Expressionist style. Construction began in 1882, but the church is still not finished today. Gaudi's death in 1926 and other complications prevented it from ever being entirely done, and it will not fully be completed until the central dome is finished.

7. Contents- What is in it? What types of works, styles?

The church contains much Christian symbolism, and is done in the Expressionist style. Each part of the church is representative of something important in the Catholic religion. It has a temple, nave, dome, multiple facades, a chapel, bell towers, and a crypt. Most of these parts are, in some way, representations of Jesus, Mary, and many saints.

8. Regional Importance- How does this landmark reflect or help define the culture of this religion and/or Spain as a whole?

La Sagrada Familia is a Catholic church, reflecting the strength of the Christian religion throughout Spain as a whole. It is located in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, Spain.
