 People: What were some of the famous people from Trajillo?

 

Francisco Pizzarro was the founder of Lima and conquered the country of Peru.

Francisco de Orellana was the discoverer of the Amazon River.

Nuflo de Chavez established the city of Santa Cruz in Bolivia.

Francisco de las Casas was one of the first people to settle in Mexico.

 

 

 

 

 

 Name: How did Trujillo get its name? How has the name changed over time?

 

This city was first called Turgalium due to the Roman presence in the area; this name most likely had a Celtic origin. Throughout the years many diffferent cultures have inhabited Trujillo such as the Romans, Moors, Christians, and Celts. Over time, many conquistadors and explorers of the New World were born. Thus, the town called itself "The Cradle of the Conquistadors."

 

 

 

 

 

 Time: When was Trujillo established and what were the dates of different reigning powers?

The Romans were the first people to establish Trujillo. By 414 CE, the Christian Visigoths overpowered the Romans and captured Trujillo. In 714, the Muslim Almohads established rule in Trujillo. Over the next 5 centuries, there was continuous conflict over the borders of the Christians and Muslims. Finally by 1256, Trujillo came under the Christian Visigoth rule. During this rule the Muslims and Jews were almost completely gone.

 

 

 

 

 

 Regional Importance: What is Trujillo most known for?

 

 Trujillo has been a city that has been fought over for many centuries. After being taken over by the Christian Visgoths from the Romans, there was much conflict between the Moors and Christians. It was one of the sites of the Reconquest. In later centuries,became the birthplace for many well-known conquistadors. Famous conquistadors such as Francisco Pizzaro, Francisco de Orellana, and Nuflo de Chaves were from this city. Now in present-day times, this city has become a place for many monuments and statues for these courageous conquistadors. The most famous of these monuments is the statue of Francisco Pizzaro that can be found in front of Trujillo's Plaza Mayor. In 1970, Trujillo was named the "National Monument of Historic & Artistic Buildings".

 

 

 

 

 Influence: What cultures have influenced Spanish architecture? What are some examples?

 

 

 

Many cultures such as the Romans, the Muslims, and the Christian Visigoths have all influenced different types of architecture in Trujillo. Examples of such fine places and monuments can be observed throughout this well-known city. One of the first examples of this in the city is the Villa. This is set . above Trujillo's main square. This villa shows influence from three different cultures, the Romans, Muslims, and Christians. It contains a grand Roman Castle and Tower, along with a Visgoth Church.
